Moscato (white) is grown throughout Italy and makes numerous sparkling, semi-sweet and passito style wines that show distinct grapey aromas and flavours. Best known for the semi-sweet Asti Spumante and the lightly fizzy and low alcohol Moscato d’Asti from Piedmont. Known as Zibibbo in Sicily and a sub-variety in Alto Adige, called Moscato Giallo, makes dessert wines of distinction, although in very small quantities. Also in Alto Adige is the rare red version, Moscato Rosa. This is highly perfumed with notes of strawberry, roses, cloves and cinnamon.
